How to Calculate Age Accurately — And Why It Is Trickier Than You Think
Calculating the exact difference between two dates — for an age, a deadline, or a duration — involves more edge cases than most people expect. Here is how to get it right every time.
At first glance, calculating age seems trivial: subtract the birth year from the current year. But accurate age calculation must account for whether the birthday has occurred yet this year, leap years (February 29 birthdays), time zones, and the cultural conventions around how age is counted — which vary significantly around the world.
The Simple Method (and Its Flaw)
Current year minus birth year gives the age in the year of the birthday. But if today is January 15 and your birthday is October 20, you have not turned that age yet. The correct approach: subtract birth year from current year, then subtract 1 if today's date is before the birthday in the current year.
Example: Born October 20, 1990. Today is January 15, 2026. Years = 2026 − 1990 = 36. January 15 is before October 20, so age = 36 − 1 = 35. If today were November 1, 2026, the birthday has passed, so age = 36.
Leap Year Birthdays (February 29)
People born on February 29 only have an exact birthday match every four years. Legal and social conventions vary by country. In most places, the birthday is treated as either February 28 or March 1 in non-leap years, depending on jurisdiction. For example, in the UK, a person born on February 29 becomes legally 18 on March 1 of the relevant year (in a non-leap year). In New Zealand, the legal birthday falls on February 28.
Age Calculation for Exact Duration
When you need the exact age in years, months, and days (for a passport application, legal document, or medical record), the calculation becomes more complex. You count full years from birth to today, then full months remaining, then remaining days.
Example: Born March 15, 1988. Today: September 11, 2026. Full years: 2026 − 1988 = 38, but birthday (March 15) has passed, so 38 years. Months since March 15 to September 11: April, May, June, July, August = 5 full months. Days: 11. Age = 38 years, 5 months, 11 days.
Days Between Two Dates
The number of days between two dates is not simply (Year2 − Year1) × 365, because leap years add an extra day every four years (with exceptions for century years). The accurate approach is to count the Julian Day Number for each date and subtract — or use a purpose-built date calculator that handles all the edge cases automatically.
How Age Is Counted Differently Around the World
In most Western countries, a newborn is age 0 and turns 1 on their first birthday. In traditional Korean age counting, a baby is born at age 1 (the first year of life) and gains a year every January 1, not on their birthday — meaning a baby born in December is counted as 2 years old the following January. South Korea officially moved to the international age system in June 2023, but traditional counting persists in cultural and informal contexts.
